A Second Custom PCB Carrier Plate Polishing Line for JONA

By:Lebon

LEBON MACHINERY worked with JONA on a second custom polishing line for PCB carrier plate refurbishment. Building on the experience of the first line, this project focused on a clear production requirement: maintaining consistent surface roughness when processing reusable plates with different thicknesses.

The second order gave both teams an opportunity to turn practical operating feedback into more specific equipment and process requirements.

Industry Application PCB Carrier Plate Refurbishment

PCB carrier plates are refurbished and returned to service for repeated use. The polishing process must restore the required surface roughness consistently so that the plates can return to the customer’s production process.

For this application, the main acceptance criterion is surface roughness stability. Refurbishment efficiency also matters because time spent adjusting the machine, trial polishing and reprocessing plates affects the customer’s operating costs.

Customer Challenges

Consistent Surface Roughness Across Repeated Refurbishment Cycles

Jo needed a polishing process that could repeatedly achieve the required surface roughness. A satisfactory sample alone was insufficient: the equipment had to support consistent results throughout routine production.

This required coordinated control of polishing pressure, feed speed and abrasive condition, with surface measurements used to verify the result.

Different Plate Thicknesses During Repair

Plates returning for refurbishment do not always have the same thickness. The polishing setup therefore needs to adapt to the incoming plate while maintaining stable processing conditions.

Slow or inconsistent adjustment can lead to repeated trial polishing and delays between plates.

Frequent Adjustments Interrupting Production

Jo also wanted to reduce the time operators spent stopping the line and resetting the machine. The requirement was to combine accurate adjustment with straightforward operation, supporting efficient transitions between different plate conditions.

LEBON Solution

For the second custom PCB carrier plate polishing line, LEBON used feedback from the first project to define four equipment and process priorities.

Precise and Repeatable Polishing Gap Adjustment

The equipment configuration focused on repeatable positioning of the polishing gap to accommodate different plate thicknesses.

The purpose was to make setup more predictable and reduce adjustment time when switching between plates.

Coordinated Control for Surface Roughness Stability

Polishing pressure, feed speed and abrasive condition were considered together when defining the process settings.

Repeatable machine settings provide a starting point. Actual surface roughness measurements remain essential to confirm that those settings produce the required finish.

Accessible Process Settings for Operators

The customization focused on making relevant process settings easy to recall and fine-tune for different plate thicknesses and surface conditions.

This approach helps operators build on established settings rather than repeat the full setup process for every change.

Support for Continuous Processing

The line configuration and operating approach were developed around reducing interruptions between plates.

Quick adjustment and practical parameter control work together to support continuous refurbishment production while keeping surface roughness as the central quality requirement.

A Second Order Built on Practical Experience

The first line gave Jo and LEBON a shared basis for discussing actual production needs. For the second order, communication became more direct: Jo could explain the operating details that mattered, and LEBON could connect that feedback with equipment configuration and process control.

This closer collaboration helped both teams develop a better understanding of PCB carrier plate refurbishment and the relationship between roughness consistency, adjustment time and production efficiency.

How to Evaluate a PCB Carrier Plate Polishing Line

For this type of application, equipment evaluation should address the following questions:

Acceptance checks should cover representative plates with different thicknesses and surface conditions. Surface roughness measurements and adjustment-time records provide a practical basis for evaluating the line.

Discuss Your PCB Carrier Plate Polishing Requirements

LEBON MACHINERY develops custom polishing solutions around the customer’s plate specifications and production requirements.

To discuss a PCB carrier plate refurbishment line, please share your plate material, dimensions, thickness range, incoming surface condition, target roughness and required production capacity. These details help us define the appropriate equipment configuration and process validation plan.
