In the field of high-precision 8K mirror finishing of stainless steel sheets, one of the most frustrating issues faced by customers is the appearance of fine scratches or “pinholes” on the finished surface. These defects are often barely visible when the material is still covered with its original skin, but become highly noticeable after mirror polishing due to the strong reflectivity, significantly affecting product quality and even resulting in batch rejection.

Based on our extensive experience, we’ve found that such surface defects typically originate from inherent quality issues in the base material—such as surface indentations, embedded impurities, or micro-pits. When the base material cannot be changed, the optimization of equipment and processing technique becomes the key to solving the problem.

We offer two effective solutions depending on the depth of the scratches:

● Scratch Depth Less Than 0.03mm

The issue can usually be resolved by adding more pre-grinding units, thereby increasing the cutting rate. This allows the entire surface to be uniformly ground below the depth of the defect, eliminating the marks while maintaining a consistent mirror finish.

● Scratch Depth Greater Than 0.03mm

We recommend first processing the surface with a belt grinding machine to reduce the scratch depth, followed by standard 8K polishing. This method effectively removes deeper defects while ensuring flatness and a flawless mirrored effect.
