No.4 and Hairline stainless steel finishes remain two of the most widely used decorative and functional surface finishes in the elevator, home appliance, kitchenware and architectural decoration markets. With the continuous development of modern building interiors and high-end appliance design, customers are placing higher requirements on surface uniformity, texture direction, gloss control, roughness consistency and defect reduction. Compared with mirror finish, No.4 and Hairline surfaces provide a more refined linear texture, better visual softness and stronger practicality in daily use, making them highly suitable for elevator doors, cabin panels, refrigerator panels, kitchen equipment, stainless steel cabinets, wall cladding and decorative metal sheets.
From a processing point of view, No.4 and Hairline finishes require stable and precise grinding or brushing technology. A typical stainless steel No.4 finishing process uses abrasive belts or brushing rollers to create a short, uniform linear grain on the metal surface, while Hairline finishing requires a longer, finer and more directional texture. To achieve consistent quality, the equipment must maintain accurate control of belt speed, feeding speed, grinding pressure, roller balance, abrasive belt tension and surface contact stability. Any fluctuation in these parameters may cause uneven lines, vibration marks, over-grinding, color difference or inconsistent surface roughness.

A complete production line may include automatic feeding, leveling, wet or dry grinding units, abrasive belt compensation, brushing stations, cleaning system, water squeezing, hot air drying, film laminating and rewinding or stacking system. In coil-to-coil processing, tension control and alignment correction are especially important to ensure continuous and stable operation. For sheet-to-sheet processing, accurate conveying and pressure adjustment help maintain uniform finishing quality across different sheet thicknesses and widths.
Wet and dry finishing technologies also play different roles in the production process. Wet grinding and brushing can reduce heat generation, lower dust emission, improve surface cleanliness and extend abrasive belt life. It is suitable for high-quality stainless steel decorative sheets and continuous coil processing. Dry finishing offers easier operation and lower water treatment requirements, and is often used for specific production conditions where coolant circulation is not necessary.
