In the fine polishing section of the 8K Mirror Polishing Machine, nitric acid may be used during the processing or cleaning stage. To improve corrosion resistance and extend the service life of the equipment, we upgrade all key structural and protective parts in this area to stainless steel.

This upgrade is not only for appearance, but also for long-term durability, easier maintenance, and more stable machine operation in an acid-splash working environment.

Why Stainless Steel Is Used in the Fine Grinding Area

Compared with ordinary carbon steel, stainless steel provides better resistance against acid mist, splashing liquid, moisture, and chemical residue. In the 8K mirror polishing process, the fine grinding area is more likely to be exposed to nitric acid or acid-containing liquid. Therefore, using stainless steel in this section helps reduce corrosion, rust, deformation, and maintenance frequency.

For this reason, the parts that may come into contact with acid will be upgraded to stainless steel, including:

  1. Machine frame in the fine grinding section

  2. Motor protective covers

  3. Anti-splash protection plates

  4. Other areas where acid mist or splashing liquid may reach

Comparison of 201, 430, 420 and 304 Stainless Steel

For this application, several stainless steel options can be considered, such as 201, 430, 420 and 304. Each material has different advantages in corrosion resistance, welding performance, cost, and delivery time.

420 stainless steel contains higher carbon content than 430. Although it has good hardness, its corrosion resistance is weaker than 430 in this type of acid-splash environment. In addition, 420 rectangular tube material is not commonly available in the domestic market. Since the tube is made from stainless steel plate, 420 material often requires special customization, which leads to longer delivery time and higher procurement difficulty.

430 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance than 420 and performs well in nitric-acid-related environments. It is a suitable option from the perspective of corrosion resistance. However, compared with 201, 430 has slightly higher welding difficulty, and the defective rate during welding and fabrication may be higher.

201 stainless steel is our most recommended solution for the fine grinding section. Under the actual working condition of the 8K mirror polishing machine, the stainless steel parts are mainly exposed to acid mist, splashing liquid, and short-term surface contact rather than long-term acid immersion. In this application, 201 stainless steel provides sufficient corrosion resistance, better welding performance, easier fabrication, more stable supply, and better overall cost control.

304 stainless steel also has good corrosion resistance, but for this machine frame application, it may increase the total cost without bringing a proportional improvement in practical use. Therefore, unless the customer has special requirements for higher-grade stainless steel, 201 and 430 are more economical and practical choices.

Our Recommended Material Selection

Based on corrosion resistance, welding performance, material availability, production stability, and delivery time, our recommendation is:

201 stainless steel is the best overall choice.
430 stainless steel is the second recommended option.
420 stainless steel is not recommended for this application.

In short, for the fine grinding section of the 8K Mirror Polishing Machine, the comprehensive material selection priority is:

201 > 430 > 420

This selection helps the machine achieve better anti-corrosion performance, longer service life, easier manufacturing, and more reliable delivery.

Anti-Corrosion Upgrade Area

To further improve the service life of the machine, we will use stainless steel not only for the frame, but also for all parts in the fine grinding area that may come into contact with nitric acid or acid mist.

The upgraded stainless steel parts include:

  • Fine grinding section frame

  • Motor protective housing

  • Anti-splash baffles

  • Acid-contact protective components

With this design, the 8K Mirror Polishing Machine can maintain better structural stability and corrosion resistance during long-term operation, helping customers reduce maintenance costs and improve production reliability.
